DPO I - Range 65 $3494 $3674 $3858 $4050 $4249** DPO II- Range 67 $3667 $3849 $4041 $4247 $4451**

** BENEFITS: CalPERS Retirement system (2% at 55) – employee contribution of 7% paid by Inyo County. Medical plan – Employee responsibility for employee and dependent monthly premium is 1% of base salary on PERS Choice plan; 100% of employee and dependent monthly premium paid for dental and vision; $20,000 term life insurance policy on employee. Vacation – 10 days per year during the first three years; 15 days per year after three years; 1 additional day for each year of service after ten years to a maximum of 25 days per year. Sick leave – 15 days per year. Flex (personal days) – 5 days per fiscal year. Paid holidays – 11 per year.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :

DPO I: The Deputy Probation Officer I initially works under close supervision learning the laws, practices, and social theory relating to probation work. A larger caseload and more difficult cases are added as knowledge and proficiency increase.

DPO II : Deputy Probation Officer II is the fully qualified journey level Probation Officer. Incumbents typically receive assignments of cases that require considerable skill, initiative, and professional judgment and which call for a thorough background in departmental procedures and policies.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES : Counsels adult and juvenile clients and adapts the treatment program to the individual; interviews offenders, victims, arresting officers, and others interested in the welfare of the individual; prepares a written report to the court; appears in court and testifies concerning the social history, motives, and personality of the offender; supervises and counsels wards of the juvenile court and juveniles and adults on probation; informs court of all violations of probationers and advises on necessary action; works with and secures the cooperation of social, law enforcement, recreational, religious, educational, and other agencies concerned with rehabilitation; arranges for court appearance for client and families; composes and dictates petitions, case histories, and correspondence; maintains records. This is a peace officer position pursuant to Penal Code Section 830.5.

OTHER EXAMPLES OF DUTIES : Arranges job placements; contacts school officials for progress reports; apprehends violators for return to custody; transports individuals when necessary; provides special grant program services to target groups to meet the program goals; keeps records; provides general probation information to the public and professional agencies; performs related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience :

DPO I : A high school graduate or equivalent with a Bachelor’s degree in social welfare, psychology, sociology, criminology, or a closely related field is preferred; OR work experience in probation, social services, substance abuse, or a closely related field may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis for up to two years.

DPO II: A Bachelor’s degree in social welfare, psychology, sociology, criminology, or a closely related field, PLUS three years work experience in probation, social services, substance abuse, or a closely related field. Work experience as described above may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis for up to two years. Must have completed Board of Corrections (STC) Deputy Probation Core training.

Knowledge of : Interview, counseling, and investigative principles and techniques; basic principles of applied psychology; general powers of arrest, search, and seizure; applicable laws and regulations.

Ability to : Learn the principles and practices of modern adult and juvenile probation work; learn State and County ordinances affecting adult and juvenile probation; learn modern casework techniques applicable to probation work; understand and deal effectively with probationers and applicants for probation; analyze investigational material and make proper deductions; write and speak effectively; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work. Must have ability to climb and descend stairs while walking or running; lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds; bend, extend, and twist body in course of duties; physically defend self (using hands, arms, or feet) against an attacking probationer or other individual; physically subdue and restrain and handcuff resisting probationers and using lifting motion, assist handcuffed individual from a prone position to his/her feet or into seat of car; use hands and fingers to search; drive a car.

Special requirements : Must be eligible for peace officer status under Penal Code Section 830.5. Certain positions may be required to carry firearms pursuant to Penal Code Section 830.5. Must pass background check, psychological examination, and physical examination, including drug screen, prior to employment. Must possess or obtain by appointment date a valid operator’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. State law prohibits employing persons in a peace officer capacity if they have been convicted of a felony. Bilingual (Spanish-English) skills are highly desirable.

SELECTION : Selection procedures will be determined by the number and qualifications of applicants and will include a qualification screening and oral interview.
